Roy Disney's Toluca Lake Residence Reimagined as a Modern Storybook Retreat

Roy Disney, the visionary and co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, left behind a legacy that has enchanted audiences around the globe. His Toluca Lake estate on Clybourn Avenue, rich in history, provides a unique canvas for a transformative redesign. By blending modern design elements with Disney's magical storytelling style, this reimagined space pays tribute to the visionary who forever changed the entertainment industry.

Preserving Legacy with Contemporary Luxury

Architect Kurt Krueger, principal of Los Angeles-based Krueger Architects, shared that the original home was a single-story structure featuring a massive brick fireplace and charming nooks. Speaking about his clients, Stephen and Sarah Whitney, he noted that "retaining the essence of Roy Disney's original vision was paramount in reimagining their home." While modernizing the space, special attention was given to preserving elements consistent with the original design, such as distinctive architectural features or vintage fixtures. This blend of old and new created a seamless transition from past to present. The Whitneys, both entertainment industry executives, wanted to live close to their offices and in a walkable community. Toluca Lake provided the perfect solution, and discovering Roy Disney's home added an interesting footnote, as Sarah works for The Walt Disney Company.

A Magical Entrance

The journey begins at the entrance, where visitors are greeted by the fragrant pathway lined with gardenias and lavender, set within a landscape designed by the local firm Benincasa Collective. This floral tapestry, inspired by Disney's legendary tales, sets the tone for the enchanting experience that awaits inside, adorning the space with the aromatic blooms of native California plants, cozy seating areas, courtyards, and a fountain.

Striking Design

Krueger collaborated with the Whitneys to add a second floor and expand the lower-level living areas. Roy Jr.'s original bedroom, where Uncle Walt told many bedtime stories, has now been transformed into an elegant, tranquil office with beautiful wood paneling for Stephen. Impressive features integrated by Krueger into the design include floor-to-ceiling glass doors, 20-foot skylights, custom ironwork, and bespoke finishes. The construction was overseen by the local firm AJS Construction.

Inspired Interiors

The interior spaces were designed to reflect the timeless elements of the early 1940s, brought to life by homeowner Sarah Whitney through her design firm, Neighborhood Design Company. Custom tiles for the flooring, wall panels, bathrooms, and open pantry were provided by Whitney, along with hardware and fixtures that, while modern in production, evoke a bygone era of elegance and refinement.

Versatile Entertainment Spaces

The redesign emphasizes the creation of flexible entertainment spaces suited for both large and small gatherings. From a cozy screening room equipped with state-of-the-art technology to a spacious patio perfect for al fresco dining, as well as an inviting hearth area, each space is designed to be both functional and enjoyable. Sculpted trees, vibrant flora, edible landscapes, and layered fragrances add subtle nods to Disney's iconic imagery, creating an immersive outdoor experience that invites guests to explore and relax in a truly magical setting.

Reimagining Roy Disney's Toluca Lake estate as a modern storybook retreat serves as a tribute to a visionary who forever transformed the landscape of storytelling and entertainment. By blending Disney's magic with contemporary design and cutting-edge technology, this transformed space stands as a testament to Roy Disney's enduring legacy, offering a creative and enchanting haven for generations to come.
